Ashley Park is a pop band fronted by Terry Miles; he's currently holed up in Vancouver, BC and will be touring the West Coast this month in support of the band's second album, The American Scene.
Current fixations:
In print: Haruki Murakami (any and all novels including The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, Dance Dance Dance, Wild Sheep Chase, etc...); on screen: The Anniversary Party and The Front ; on stage: "Closer" by Patrick Marber.
Mind-altering work of art:
Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead by Tom Stoppard.
Most memorable or inspirational gig and why?
David Lee Roth's solo tour with Steve Vai, because the girl I was with did mushrooms and threw up all over my shoes. Roth was hot.
What has been your career high and low?
High: Putting out the first Saturnhead album, and being able to hang out with Kurt from Lilys and those cats in Beachwood Sparks. Good times.
Low: Coming to the realisation that it's incredibly hard to do band thing all alone. Luckily I have my girlfriend Kelly playing electric piano now, and Gregory has been great behind the drums. Now if I could just find the perfect fourth. Anybody out there play bass/keys/lap steel? Wanna tour Europe?
What should everyone shut up about?
Eminem. Leave him alone, he's just some guy making music that he obviously digs.
I would drop everything to play a benefit for:
New country.
What trait do you like and dislike most about yourself?
Like: I have fairly good topspin forehand.
Dislike: My strange penchant for Barbra Streisand's music and films.
What would make you kick someone out of your band and/or bed, and have you?
Band: Cold feet.
Bed: Drunkenly yelling out dumb song titles from their "upcoming" solo record.
When I think of Canada I think:
Long scenic drives... very long.
What is your vital daily ritual?
Chai tea, running through the park.
How do you spoil yourself?
Buying many more records and books than I can possibly afford, and seeing as many movies as I can.
What was your most memorable day job?
My friend and I cleaned up the Corral 4 Drive-In in Calgary for a couple of weekends. We found the craziest shit you could imagine. Things that have no business being together, yet here they were, strangely connected. Weird.
If I wasn't playing music I would be:
In the Matt Good band.
What is your greatest fear?
Flying and death... in that order.
If you had a superpower, what would it be?
Silver Surfer.
What makes you want to take it off and get it on?
Paris (France or Ontario) and ladies singles at Wimbledon.
Music and sex: Is there a difference? Why?
Music and sex are exactly the same thing. You're constantly getting up to flip the album. You're constantly flipping your hair. I don't know.
Strangest brush with celebrity:
Moving to Vancouver and discovering that every older fella looks exactly like Leslie Nielsen.
Who would be your ideal dinner guest, living or dead, and what would you serve them?
Kevin Smith and Jason Lee. I would serve them booze and curry of some description. That would be cool.
What does your mom wish you were doing instead?
Vacuuming out her car.
