Having just released her debut album i used to think i could fly earlier this year, Calgary-born pop phenom Tate McRae has already hit another massive milestone: her 2020 single "you broke me first" is the latest to join the ranks of songs like Goo Goo Dolls' "Iris," Olivia Rodrigo's "drivers license" and several Queen hits that have surpassed one billion streams on Spotify.

From the EP Too Young to be Sad, "you broke me first" was released in April 2020. Written by McRae, Blake Harnage and Victoria Zaro (who records and performs her own music under the name Ryann), the song exploded on TikTok and became the year's second-most streamed track by a woman, peaking at No. 8 on the Canadian Hot 100.

Over the weekend, Spotify announced the news in a congratulatory tweet to McRae, who now appears on the cover of the platform's Billions Club playlist.

Join the club β€” they say billions are doing it β€” by watching the Calgary Tower-cameoing video for "you broke me first" below, which the artist apparently filmed in quarantine by taping her phone to the front of her mom's car.

If Bill C-11, new legislation that would force US streamers and other foreign tech agencies to finance CanCon, passes through the Senate, some of McRae's and Justin Bieber's songs may no longer qualify as Canadian on Spotify.
