Sufjan Stevens Announces New Album 'Javelin,' Shares Lead Single "So You Are Tired"

It's his sixth release since 2020, and his 11th studio LP overall

Who's ready to be devastated? Sufjan Stevens — who told me he was done making albums for at least five years back in 2020 — has reneged on his promise once again and announced his solo follow-up to The Ascension. The artist's 11th studio album, titled Javelin, is due to arrive on October 6 through (where else but) Asthmatic Kitty.

Said to find him in "full singer-songwriter mode" for the first time since 2015's Carrie & Lowell, the 10-track album is full of uncharacteristically normal-human-length songs, and sees Stevens returning to orchestral and choral arrangements, calling back to 2004's Seven Swans. There's even a Neil Young cover! Fun!

Collaborators include adrienne maree brown, Hannah Cohen, Pauline Delassus, Megan Lui, Nedelle Torrisi, and, of course, Bryce Dessner.

The album will arrive alongside a 48-page book of art and essays from Stevens. It includes original paintings and collages, as well as 10 glimpses into "loves and losses that have shaped him, and, in turn, these songs."

Today, we get a preview of the record with its lead single "So You Are Tired," which you can hear below.

So far, no word on an accompanying tour. Fingers crossed, friends!
