Spiritualized, Liars and More Join the Boss in Paying Tribute to Suicide With Covers EPs

If you've been combing the vinyl section these days, you may have noticed some rather interesting new Suicide offerings. In celebration of the 70th birthday of the band's more vocal half, synth-punk grandfather Alan Vega, artists such as Bruce Springsteen, Spiritualized, Liars and Grinderman have signed on to cover Suicide for a series of limited edition ten-inches, with one being released every month by Blast First Petite. So far, only the releases featuring Springsteen, the Horrors and Lydia Lunch have hit shops but recently the label revealed more details about what's in store for the rest of the series.

Slated for later this year, the label has confirmed releases by Sunn 0))) and Pansonic redoing the Suicide track "Che," Peaches taking on "Johnny," Klaxons covering "Sweethart" and Japrock aficionado Julian Cope doing "Girl." Also lined up to cover as-yet-unconfirmed tracks are Liars, Spiritualized, Grinderman and Gavin Friday and David Ball. (Unlike previously reported, it appears Vincent Gallo has made the predictably flaky move of dropping out of the project.)

So far, all the forthcoming ten-inches have yet to receive release dates, with the exception of the next one in the series, which features Primal Scream doing a cover of "Diamonds, Fur Coat, Champagne" alongside electro queen Miss Kittin. That one is due out on on March 30 via a limited run of 3,000 vinyl copies and digitally.

Scream front-man Bobby Gillespie recently spoke to NME about the band's contribution, saying: "Suicide songs are so perfect and fully realized that it was hard to pick one and reinterpret it in a personal way.

"We chose 'Diamonds, Fur Coat, Champagne,' as we loved the lyric and also its sci-fi, futuristic sound. We did a garage rock glam version with French electro chanteuse Miss Kitten in the end, and tried to bring out the pop song that lies beneath every Suicide track."

Like all the ten-inches in the series, Primal Scream's slab of vinyl also features a Suicide rarity on the B-side, along with a lesser-known up-and-comer taking on another of Vega track.
