Sky Ferreira Lands Role in Movie About Norwegian Black Metal Band Mayhem

BY Sarah MurphyPublished Oct 21, 2016

Sky Ferreira has yet to deliver her highly anticipated sophomore record album Masochism, but she seems to be keeping busy with other projects, as well. She's now been cast in a new film called Lords of Chaos.

The film tells the story of Norwegian black metal pioneers Mayhem, who are as much remembered for their music as their wild stage antics, burning down churches, and the grisly murder of guitarist Øystein Aarseth by former member Varg Vikernes.

The new movie is helmed by director Jonas Akerlund, who himself dabbled in black metal, playing with Bathory in the '80s. Since then, though, he's become primarily known for his blockbuster music videos, including clips for Roxette, the Prodigy, Madonna, Blink-182, Lady Gaga and Britney Spears.

He's also a recurring Beyoncé collaborator, directing videos for her Gaga collaboration "Telephone," "Haunted" and "Superpower" off her 2013 self-titled visual album, and this year's Lemonade. Akerlund also directed Jay Z and Beyoncé's On the Run Tour concert film for HBO in 2014, as well as Taylor Swift's Apple-exclusive The 1989 World Tour Live concert documentary last year.

Akerlund's last feature film arrived with Small Apartments in 2012.

Also confirmed to star in Lords of Chaos are Rory Culkin, Emory Cohen and Jack Kilmer. The film is being produced by Danny Gabai and Jim Czarnecki (Vice Films), Ezna Sands (Insurgent), Jack Arbuthnott (Scott Free), Frederick Zander (Chimney Pot), Ko Mori (Eleven Arts) and Kwesi Dickson. Eddy Moretti, Shane Smith and Vince Landay of Vice will executive produce along with Ashley Richardson of Insurgent and Carlo Dusi of Scott Free.
