San Fermin — the orchestral pop collective helmed by Brooklyn-based composer Ellis Ludwig-Leone — have announced their fifth studio album, led by new single "Didn't Want You To."
Arms arrives February 16 via Better Company Records. It follows 2019's The Cormorant, and San Fermin will bring their new songs on tour across North America next year. They have plans for a lone Canadian stop at Vancouver's Biltmore Cabaret on May 9.
Inspired by the rollercoaster of recovering from not one, but two breakups, Ludwig-Leone turned to longtime collaborator and vocalist Allen Tate to distill the experience into the album's nine tracks. Arms was written from multiple viewpoints, characteristic of the ensemble's approach on previous records, but the arrangements are pared back to expose what press materials refer to as San Fermin's "most emotionally vulnerable album to date."
Of the defiant single, Ludwig-Leon said, "I had this feeling after going through a breakup, like, 'Well screw you, if you don't want to be with me, I don't want to be with you,' which turns out to be a pretty universal feeling. The wordplay was fun, messing around with different inflections of the refrain to hint at different meanings."
