The life and work of Salome Bey — the American-born, Canadian singer-songwriter, composer and actress — will be commemorated with a new stamp from Canada Post.
Bey's commemorative stamp will be unveiled at Meridian Hall in Toronto on April 21 in a ceremony attended by the late artist's daughters, SATE and tUkU, and other special guests yet to be announced.
A press release notes that the stamp's arrival will also coincide with a reissue of Bey's self-titled debut album, initially released in 1970 via Quality Records. Further details on the reissue are unavailable as of press time.
A Grammy-nominated artist and a member of the Order of Canada who was affectionately known as Canada's First Lady of Blues, Bey passed away in August 2020 at age 86.
Other Canadian artists previously honoured with commemorative stamps include Buffy Sainte-Marie, Rush, Leonard Cohen, Stan Rogers, Paul Anka, Joni Mitchell, Gordon Lightfoot, Anne Murray, the Guess Who, the Tragically Hip and Beau Dommage.
