Rivers Cuomo Names 'SZNZ' as the Best Weezer Album
He's also picked a few of the band's most underrated songs
Published Jun 26, 2023Everyone can agree that Weezer's catalogue is an extremely mixed bag — even frontman Rivers Cuomo, who recently acknowledged that the band have too many albums. But not everyone can quite agree about which albums are the best worst, as Cuomo has now named last year's EP series SZNZ as his favourite album the band have ever made.
In an interview with Vulture, Cuomo was asked what he thinks the best Weezer album is. He couched his response by saying "I don't do favourites," but then he shouted out last year's season EPs: "I love Summer, Autumn and Winter, all for different reasons. They all came out last year. It would be very hard to choose, so I'll just say SZNZ."
Elsewhere in the interview, Cuomo revealed which Weezer song he wishes got more attention: "We put out Winter and there's an incredible song called 'Iambic Pentameter' that has this insane guitar-solo instrumental passage where we're jamming out with an orchestra, and oh my God, it's so fun. So yeah, that would probably be my first vote."
Cuomo is self-aware about the fact that he's shouting out his most recent work: "Like many artists, I'm usually most excited about the thing I just made," he acknowledged.
He also celebrated a couple more underrated Weezer songs: the epic suite "The Greatest Man That Ever Lived (Variations on a Shaker Hymn)" and the outtake demo "Longtime Sunshine." Maybe the latter wouldn't be under-appreciated if he put it on a proper album, rather than simply on a demos compilation?
Weezer are touring this summer, with a stop in Toronto.
