Vanilla Call Option

California resident Jeff Witscher records under a plethora of monikers, yet Rene Hell is the alias that's seen the most mileage. With two extremely mind-blowing LPs out on the Type label and two splits — an earlier twelve-inch face-off with Robert Beatty's Three Legged Race project and a more recent one with Oneohtrix Point Never on the burgeoning NNA Tapes imprint — the Rene Hell catalogue is expanding tirelessly. Vanilla Call Option is Witscher's first release for German label PAN, which specializes in gorgeously packaged vinyl records laden with myriad exploratory sounds. This latest missive from Rene Hell fits right into PAN's wheelhouse, with its fractured electronics and neo-concrète style; it's a painfully unique album that stands alone when compared to Witscher's earlier work. Inspired by a passion for chess, the loneliness of constant travel and the minimalist design of interstitial locations, Vanilla Call Option finds Rene Hell taking a leap forward into the future of music.
