Post Malone was in Toronto last month for performances at Budweiser Stage on July 19 and 20, and while he was in town, he left quite a bit of money behind: he paid more than $2 million USD ($2.67 million CAD) for a single Magic: The Gathering card.
Posty bought the card from local Toronto man Brook Trafton, who was the lucky finder of MTG's "The One Ring" card from the game's new Lord of the Rings collaboration. It's an ultra-rare card, with numerous companies having publicly placed a bounty on it — but Trafton, through his representatives, reached out to Post Malone personally, since the musician is famously a huge MTG fan. Posty had previously paid $800,000 USD ($1.07 million CAD) for a Magic card.
When Post Malone was in town, his reps called Trafton to come meet the artist at Bud Stage. At that point, Trafton was fielding several offers, but once he met Posty and started talking Magic, the musician made him an offer that Trafton accepted.
Trafton was working in retail up until selling the card to Post Malone. He told CTV News [via CP24], "I'm 37, I've lived paycheck to paycheck most of my life. I understand how to make life with little, so this is more than average. I want to make sure that I'm secure for life."
Trafton bought the life-changing box of Magic cards from Face to Face Games on the Danforth. He knew about the bounties on the card, and, in a very Charlie Bucket moment, instantly knew what he had found when he opened it. News about the card's discovery became public, but Trafton didn't identify himself as the finder until now. "That was more for, pretty much just my safety," he said. "It was out of my hands before I came out with it, and that was the hardest thing to do because I was so excited. I wanted to tell everybody, I didn't even tell my dad."
