Poison Pen

The Money Shot

BK spitter Poison Pen is the one fat guy in your group of friends who's kind of a jerk but is still fun to drink with. Pen has kicked around the underground for a while, appearing on tracks by Apathy, MF Doom and Immortal Technique. The Money Shot is his de facto solo debut, conveying Pen's primary interests: drinking, fighting and women. Pen's humour and slobbery flow are infectious but bargain-basement production and head-scratching cameos (Silkk The Shocker?) do him no favours. He can be serious too; Pen and Immortal Technique discuss the right to bear arms on "The 2nd Amendment." But Poison Pen's strength is greasy talk. The M.O.P. feature "Magnifique" thumps and clanks like Robocop. "Facebreaker" has Pen and Swave Sevah trading promises of ass-kickings over woozy organs and horn blurts. The hilarious "O.E.O.G. (8 Ball Junkie)" is an ode to malt liquor produced by comedy rap mastermind J-Zone. Pen is entertaining in small doses but his limited subject matter grows repetitive over the length of an album.
