The who? Elton John has recorded a new album with Brandi Carlile, according to the oracular source that is the Who's Pete Townshend.

In a recent interview with Clash, Townshend told the publication that John and Joni Mitchell-whisperer Carlile had gotten into the studio together late last year.

"Elton is so fraught with loss at not knowing what to do next," Townsend said, referring to the legend having at long last played the final show of his farewell tour this summer. "He's just gone over to L.A. to make an album with Brandi Carlile. They made an album together in two weeks. He says it's one of the best things they've ever done."

John teased new music last November when he was on hand to induct longtime collaborator Bernie Taupin into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, promising in his speech that it would "surprise the shit" out of you. "It's absolutely wonderful, and it's full of youth, and it's full of vitality," John said at the time. "It's a wonderful place to be after [Taupin and I have] been together for 56 years."

Carlile and John previously joined forces in 2021 for The Lockdown Sessions, which produced the hit Dua Lipa-assisted single "Cold Heart (PNAU Remix)." The pair are also close friends, with Carlile having told People last year that her friendship with John is "an amazing one," adding, "I think we find ourselves in a position of being soulmates."
