British songwriter Nilüfer Yanya has shared the second single from her upcoming sophomore full-length PAINLESS.
"Midnight Sun" is a shapeshifting, beat-forward beast of a song, finding Yanya at a relative slowboil before erupting in a wall of choked distortion.
In a statement about the track, Yanya said:
It's a song about recognizing what it feels like to be pushed down but wanting to resist. I really like the imagery of 'midnight sun' as a lyric as it insinuates a light guiding you through darkness. The wings carry their own symbolism — freedom, lightness, flight, fantasy. If I could pick what people saw and heard it would be seeing the beauty of confrontation and the necessity of rebellion.
"Midnight Sun" follows first single "Stabilise." PAINLESS is the full-length follow-up to 2020's Feeling Lucky? EP. Her debut album Miss Universe came out in 2019, and Exclaim! caught up with Yanya that year to chat about the record.
