Backstreet Boys' Nick Carter is paying tribute to his brother, the late Aaron Carter, after the former child pop star's sudden passing on Saturday (November 5).
"My heart is broken," the elder Carter began in a tweet on Sunday (November 6). "Even though my brother and I have had a complicated relationship, my love for him has never ever faded."
He continued: "I have always held on to the hope that he would somehow, someday want to walk a healthy path and eventually find the help that he so desperately needed."
Before his brother's death in 2019, Nick Carter was granted a restraining order against Aaron after the younger brother threatened Nick, his wife and their then-unborn child. In the years leading up to his death, Aaron struggled with mental health issues and addiction.
"Sometimes we want to blame someone or something for a loss," Nick added, "but the truth is that addiction and mental illness are the real villains here. I will miss my brother more than anyone will ever know. I love you baby brother."
Aaron Carter was found dead in a bathtub in his house in Lancaster, CA, on Saturday. His cause of death is still being investigated as of press time. He was 34 years old.
