In the late '90s, Billy Bragg and Wilco famously teamed up to write music for some previously unrecorded Woody Guthrie lyrics. Now, a similar project has been launched to bring some of Bob Dylan's unheard words to life.
Dubbed Lost on the River: The New Basement Tapes, the project features Elvis Costello, Jim James of My Morning Jacket, Marcus Mumford of Mumford & Sons, Taylor Goldsmith of Dawes, and Rhiannon Giddens of Carolina Chocolate Drops, along with producer T Bone Burnett.
The source material is two dozen sets of recently uncovered lyrics that Dylan wrote in 1967, during the same period that spawned The Basement Tapes. The results will be released later in 2014 by Electromagnetic Recordings/Harvest Records. There will also be a Showtime documentary about the project called Lost Songs: The Basement Tapes Continued, directed by Sam Jones (I Am Trying to Break Your Heart).
Burnett said in a press release, "Great music is best created when a community of artists gets together for the common good. There is a deep well of generosity and support in the room at all times, and that reflects the tremendous generosity shown by Bob in sharing these lyrics with us."
Recording is apparently almost finished. Stay tuned for more details about Lost on the River; in the meantime, a slightly barebones website for the project has been launched.
