Neurosis's Scott Kelly and Steve Von Till Team Up with Wino for Townes Van Zandt Tribute

Despite their varied solo careers, Scott Kelly and Steve Von Till are remembered most for the bone-crushing doom and gloom of mighty Bay Area metal masters Neurosis. The pair, along with former Saint VitustThe Obsessed leader Scott "Wino" Weinrich, will keep to the quieter side of things, though, on an upcoming tribute album to folk icon Townes Van Zandt.

A press release explains that all three men have performed Van Zandt throughout the years, either solo or together, and their collective love for the late singer-songwriter will be displayed on the aptly titled Songs of Townes Van Zandt. The nine-song set arrives June 12 through Neurot/My Proud Mountain.

The performers tackle three songs each on the collection, described as a great homage to Van Zandt's "broken-hearted love songs and gloom-ridden tales." You can stream Kelly's acoustic rendition of "St. John the Gambler" down below.

"Townes Van Zandt's music is not only brutally honest, he has an ability to paint a picture with his words that is so far beyond the reach and depth of anyone else I have heard to this day," Kelly said in a statement. "I am honoured to be a part of this record and get the opportunity to bring his music to people who are fans of what I have been doing, and I am humbled to be in the presence of my two brothers Steve Von Till and Wino."

In other Neurosis news, Brooklyn Vegan reports that the band have finished mixing a new full-length in Chicago. While neither an album title nor a release date has yet to appear, the LP is expected to arrive sometime later this year.

Neurosis's last full-length was 2007's Given to the Rising.
