Hailing from Timisoara, Romania, Negură Bunget have the rare privilege of genuinely referring to themselves as a Transylvanian black metal band. Their set was by far the most ritualistic that the Maryland Deathfest audience had been treated to so far, carefully weighted and measured, each song allowed to slowly swell and bloom like a corpse flower. The set indulged in everything from extended pan flute passages to a flute solo, but the sheer charisma of Negură Bunget pulled every extremity off beautifully. As their hair flashed and the guitars throbbed, it was easy to believe that we were watching something being conjured up in that dirty, sweaty room.
