The Nautical Miles

'Ode to Joy' (album stream)

Here's one of the last new albums you will ever hear from celebrated Vancouver-area studio the Hive. That facility shut down last year, but not before local roots outfit the Nautical Miles recorded their album Ode to Joy. It's due out on February 25 and is available to stream now on Exclaim.ca.

The 12-track collection was produced by Jesse Gander (Japandroids, the Pack A.D.). It was composed by the band's principal songwriter Corbin Murdoch during a six-month journey in 2012 that brought him to Bogota, Colombia, Timbuktu, Mali, and Bruno, SK.

The results take a non-traditional approach to folksy roots rock, as "All This Talk About Endings" sports electronic beats, "Love's Little Sister" is a fuzzily danceable robo-rocker, and "Summerlegs" showcases jazzy sax soloing.

Listen below. The Nautical Miles will celebrate the release of Ode to Joy with a show at the Biltmore in Vancouver on March 8.
