At just 91 pages, many would argue that The Dears: Lost in the Plot, Lorraine Carpenter's new book about Montreal indie-rockers, is a little thin. Others however, would question the need for a book about the band in the first place. The first of a planned Bibliophonic series modelled on the popular 33 1/3 books, Carpenter plays the role of converted advocate well, chronicling the band's knack for haemorrhaging members while offering a sharp, if often-times personal take on their oeuvre. Most bands wait decades for this kind of analysis. But in providing a detailed summation of their career to date, the Bibliophonic series appeases die-hards in a format that even the most casual fan can digest.
