Toronto's Mother Tongues — the project led by vocalist/bassist Charise Aragoza and guitarist/vocalist Lukas Cheung — have announced their highly anticipated debut full-length album, previewed by dreamy noir lead single "A Heart Beating."

Love in a Vicious Way arrives July 21 via Wavy Haze. It follows the band's debut EP, 2020's Everything You Wanted.

Cheung co-produced the album alongside Asher Gould-Murtagh (Born Ruffians, Kali Horse). "It's an exploration of the darker ways we love, the parts with teeth," Cheung said of its title. "It possesses you, it's a pit you fall into. Love overtakes you, this record is about surrendering to that feeling."

The 10-track record, described in press materials as a "cyber-psych opus," sees Cheung and Aragoza joined by Kvesche Bijons-Ebacher on synths, Lane Halley on guitar and Nick Kervin on drums, all of whom have played with the likes of Lido Pimienta, Zoon and Maylee Todd.

"We're peering into the future and imagining what this world could be," Cheung continued of the worldbuilding Mother Tongues have done on their first LP. "It's a little William Gibson, a little cyberpunk, it's lit like a Wong-Kar-Wai film. It's queer, it's free, a little goth, everyone's wearing eyeliner. I like to imagine our record bleeding out of the headphones of some 16-year-old in this not-so-distant universe."

"'A Heart Beating' speaks to how we can find ourselves lost in the feedback loop of regrets and longing," the band added of the mesmerizing opening track. "The chorus repeats like some hypnotic spell calling you back into your body."
