Elton John's upcoming 40th anniversary edition of Goodbye Yellow Brick Road is packed to the gills with extra goodies, including some cover versions of the song cycle from contemporary artists. R&B sweetheart Miguel gets the honour of tackling John's iconic glam stomp "Bennie and the Jets," and you can hear the revamped version now, a couple days ahead of the package's March 25 street date.
Subverting the original arrangement, those familiar staccato piano chord bursts get chopped and manipulated through a sampler, with synth-bass forcefully wriggling through the spaces in between. Miguel adds a few ad-libbed "yeahs" and "alrights" while smoothly summarizing the pop stardom of mohair-suited Bennie and her cast of rock and roll all-stars, the Jets. Wale flips the script completely, adding half-sung/half-rapped bars to the tune which weigh in on the sex-sells mentality of the music biz.
You can catch the redo in full down below.
As previously reported, the upcoming Goodbye Yellow Brick Road drops next Tuesday (March 25) through Universal Music Canada, and also comes equipped with B-sides, live tracks, and covers prepped by Fall Out Boy, Emeli Sandé, Zac Brown Band and more.
