Michael Jerome Browne

& the Twin Rivers String Band

BY Sean PalmerstonPublished Nov 1, 2004

Recorded live off the floor in five days, this is an album made the way people don’t make records anymore. Led by multi-instrumentalist Michael Jerome Brown, who plays fiddle, gourd banjo, mandolin and Hawaiian guitar on this album’s 19 tracks, he and his four-piece backing band play traditional string band music that knows no boundaries. Crossing from Appalachian ballads to western swing to traditional bluegrass, the band is adventurous and well accomplished on their instruments, with their musical prowess shining through brightly no matter the style of song they attempt. The quintet revels in their wide scope and vision and has made a solid, traditional roots album that is well worth seeking out.
