Today marks 40 years since Metallica's serendipitous formation when James Hetfield found Lars Ulrich through an ad in a Los Angeles Recycler newspaper, and even though they can certainly do, they've decided to teach: the band will impart their decades of sage rock 'n' roll savvy in a new MasterClass course that launched yesterday (October 27).

Although many of the best of the best (from James Cameron to Gordon Ramsey) have recorded classes, Metallica are the first band to offer instruction on the educational streaming platform. They'll be teaching a variety of strategies for those about to rock: collaborating creatively, songwriting, staying together and growing as a band, cultivating a relationship with fans and so much more.

Much of it seems to come down to effective communication, as Ulrich, Hetfield, Kirk Hammett and Robert Trujillo discuss in the trailer for the course. They also share how ego can get in the way — and that being overly critical of each other almost caused a Metallica break-up.

"We have sustained our bond for more than 40 years because we've learned a lot about each other and ourselves over time," Hetfield said in a statement. "In our class, we not only teach MasterClass members how we write songs and find inspiration for our music, but how the experiences we've had together have contributed to successful creative collaboration."

The songwriting studies portion of the course will reportedly involve the band dissecting some of their greatest hits like "Enter Sandman" and "Master of Puppets" to guide students through the process of how they came together.

Earlier this month, Ulrich admitted that bassist Jason Newsted's exit from the band "makes complete sense."  Exclaim! also ranked all 53 covers on Metallica's mammoth Blacklist.
