Max Tundra

"Mastered By Guy At The Exchange"

BY Cam LindsayPublished Apr 1, 2003

Never one to bore a listener, Max Tundra (aka Ben Jacobs) has the ability to boggle even the most brilliant minds. Making music that sounds as if he was dropped on his head as an infant, Tundra’s quirky pop is utterly without boundaries. "Mastered By Guy At The Exchange,” his fourth album, fuses pop with elegant spots of jazz, clownish glitchy electronics and a dire need to entertain, à la artists such as Prince and current fave, Har Mar Superstar. Without following any sort of structure or formula whatsoever, "MBGATE” is an oddball listen, yet it doesn’t pigeonhole itself as a comedic or silly album. Though at times it sounds rather childish, Tundra’s taste in the absurd is purely creative fun that is smart enough to know when to say when.
