“My name’s Mark Sultan, I’m going to play rock’n’roll-type music,” Mark Sultan said, tongue-in-cheek, “with a fresh new edge.” Sultan proceeded to attack his guitar with his turbocharged doo-wop, waking up the Tuesday night crowd and turning rock’n’roll inside out. Sultan tore through his set, bridging the gaps between Dion and the Belmonts and contemporary garage punk. Breaking into an a cappella bridge, he performed possibly the only a cappella rendition ever done in Gus’ Pub. As the crowd got rowdy, Sultan stopped playing and told them off: “This isn’t Edgefest!” He picked up the guitar again and went on to play through about six encores or so.
