Marduk

World Funeral

BY Greg PrattPublished Jun 1, 2003

Once past the fact that the first song is called "With Satan and Victorious Weapons," the listener is in for a treat here with Sweden's Marduk, who offer up 45 minutes of pure, unholy black metal. No elves, keyboards or frilly olde English shirts allowed here, as Marduk blast the hell through these songs, never sacrificing a moment of sonic brutality. It's not all speed either, as the band throws in a few moments of breathing time with some slower passages, none of which lose the band's ability to crush. It's a real Satanic mosh pit, one that will please the black metal types who like to keep it real, but lacking in anything incredibly interesting to reel in fresh blood. And, once more: the first song is called "With Satan and Victorious Weapons." Unbelievable.
