Mac DeMarco Says His New Album Sounds Like "the Ewok Village"

"I'm in New York. Am I working on it in New York? Maybe a little bit, some. Just in New York? Nah, I don't think so. But I'm here now"

Since sharing Here Comes the Cowboy in 2019, Mac DeMarco has treated listeners to Here Comes the Cowboy Demos and Other Here Comes the Cowboy Demos. Now, he's hit the dusty trail towards his next LP, inspired by a galaxy far, far away.

DeMarco let the details slip in conversation with Vicky Farewell as part of NME's Friends Like These series, confirming that he is at work on his fifth studio full-length. "I'm working on a record. I'm in New York," he shared. "Am I working on it in New York? Maybe a little bit, some. Just in New York? No, I don't think so. But I'm here now."

The artist didn't tie the new material's sound to the American metropolis, or his current home base of California, but rather the Star Wars universe. "You guys seen Return of the Jedi?" he asks. "You know the Ewok village? Sounds like that, I would like to think."

DeMarco added that the record-making has happened alongside a focus on "living a happy life, and it's working," sharing with Farewell — who is signed to Mac's Record Label — that he is "reteaching myself how to rock and roll."

The two also reflect on their all-time favourite artists, first live shows and more. You can watch their complete interview below.

DeMarco recently appeared in a new video from DOMi and JD Beck, the latter of whom drums in his live band. Last year, he was one of 53 artists to cover Metallica for some very heavy anniversary celebrations.
