Lord Dying have come to the crossroads that all talented heavy bands with longevity inevitably hit. Having established themselves as a bulldozing sludge band who can carve out monstrous riffs, the time has come for them to diversify or die. Mysterium Tremendum strips away the groundwork that Lord Dying had previously built their following on, and successfully recreate themselves in ways more nuanced and emotionally diverse.

Melody and vocals have become Lord Dying's emotional high point. "Tearing at the Fabric of Consciousness," "Nearing the End of the Curling Worm" and "The End of Experience" are all highlighted by sprinklings of vocal harmonies throughout. What was once only an exclamation point in their music is now being used in a plethora of ways. Mysterium Tremendum sees Lord Dying taking their previous weaknesses and making them strengths.

Riffs will always be an important part of Lord Dying's sound, and Mysterium Tremendum makes guitar solos cool again with the Eagles-infused "Severed Forever" and the shred-fest that is "Split From Within/Devoid of Dreams/Death, the Final Loneliness." Lord Dying have created guitar solos that matter.
