Listening to Drake Makes You Run Slower, Study Finds

BTS and Doja Cat are also among the artists who could pumping the brakes on your workout playlist

Running through the 6ix with your woes tends to have adverse effects on your speed: a new study has revealed that listening to Drake slows down runners more than any other artist.

Apparel retailer Pour Moi shared the findings in an article aptly titled The Music that Makes You Run Faster Revealed — and lo and behold, they did just that. In addition to Drizzy, BTS and Doja Cat were also potential deadweights on your workout playlist, meanwhile listening to the likes of Beyoncé, Harry Styles and Britney Spears are more likely to help you accelerate your pace.

According to their methodology section, they compiled the results of their study by recording the running times of 20 different runners, who listened to a range of 20 artists and ran a minimum of 1 kilometre to each. Their speeds were recorded using a smart fitness device.

They then analyzed the total distance ran, overall time, kilometre split time, average pace per kilometre and average pace difference per artist per kilometre to calculate the difference in speeds of kilometres ran while listening to each musician.

Ranking the 20 artists from highest to lowest on both ends of the spectrum (i.e., artists that speed you up and artists that slow you down), Drake came out on the top of the latter.

Listening to the 6ix God can actually add 21 seconds of activity to your run time per kilometre, which adds up to an additional 1 minute and 45 seconds to a 4.8-kilometre run time and a whopping 14 minutes and 42 seconds to a marathon's length (approximately 42 kilometres).

On the other side, listening to Beyoncé can shave 33 seconds per kilometre off your run time, improving a 4.8-kilometre by 2 minutes and 45 seconds, and burning 23 minutes and 12 seconds off a marathon time.

That old cliché about slow and steady winning the race? Occasionally, it rings true (maybe at 7 a.m. on the Bridle Path?) — but usually not when you're going against the clock. By all means, speed isn't the name of the game... however, if you're looking to get faster with your cardio, getting up in Drake's feelings might not be the move.
