For many, the A/Visions segments of MUTEK is the festival's highlight. As a seated show in Théâtre Ludger-Duvernay, it has a distinctly different vibe than everything else, and though all MUTEK shows this year have been a visual delight, this is where the real ocular magic happened.
Montreal-based artist Line Katcho's show, in contrast with Messier and YRO's set before hers, was a technicolour delight to behold. The massive screen on the theatre's stage was an ever-morphing canvas of colours. The music rose higher and higher into a tumult of busy sounds as faces and shapes shifted gloriously at her fingertips. Watercolour pastels showing images of corridors seeped into bubbles, like film strips blistering under intense heat. Her visual performance showed the connection between blood vessels and foliage, linking the human body to natural formations. Desert scenes with sparse foliage pulsed in neon green light, and multiple faces re-emerged throughout, bringing us back and forth amid personal and impersonal imagery.
