Lee Gamble 'Models' His First New Album in Six Years with "She's Not"

The artist's latest for Hyperdub arrives in October

Lee Gamble has detailed his fifth studio LP. The producer and DJ will share new album Models on October 20 via Hyperdub.

Gamble's first full-length since 2017's Mnestic Pressure, the seven-song Models finds Gamble working with synthetic voice, using techniques not unlike the ones that informed his 2012 album Diversions 1994-1996.

Where that LP found the artist toying with sonic fragments selected from his collection of jungle cassette mixtapes, Models sees Gamble feed loose phrases into a series of neural networks, which would then attempt to sing them back in mimicry.

Press material notes how the process often resulted in almost wordless, "indecipherable clouds," which Gamble would then take and further shape into "dreamy pop simulacrums," ultimately making for an examination of how "intonation and language is engineered to monopolize our attention."

"She's Not" is the first of the creations to arrive, first occupying darkened, ambient territory ahead of the voice models ushering in more spectral, pop-oriented sounds that revolve around its titular phrase. You can hear it below.

In the time since delivering Mnestic Pressure, Gamble has worked at shorter lengths with Hyperdub, releasing EPs like Exhaust, In a Paraventral Scale and A Million Pieces of You through the label.
