Laurel Aitken

The Godfather of Ska

BY Skip ViitalaPublished Feb 1, 2001

The old natural ska vibe is working overtime on this painstakingly thorough collection of Laurel's early works. Dr. Ring Ding fittingly provides the liner notes and it's easy to see where he got some of his inspiration from. Laurel is a definite master of the microphone. There are many sweet numbers with the ska-authentic groove that was so popular in the '60s, and if you don't mind or if you can appreciate the poor sound quality, there's really nothing wrong with this. It's so nice to hear some more of his early stuff and to realise that he had "it" back then, as well as today.
