Kurt Cobain

'Illiteracy Will Prevail' (Fecal Matter demo)

BY Gregory AdamsPublished Aug 5, 2015

Though one might argue that it's never really waned, the recent Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck documentary has renewed interest in all things Kurt Cobain. While a solo LP of unreleased material is apparently in the works, internet sleuths have also dug up the demo tape of his pre-Nirvana project, Fecal Matter. Lest it gets ganked immediately, you can stream the rare recordings right now.

As you'll discover, Fecal Matter's Illiteracy Will Prevail isn't the most hi-fi of experiences, but its gooey assemblage of metal-and-punk mining riffs definitely lays the groundwork for Bleach. Recorded in 1986, the tape features the early yowls and licks of Kurt Cobain, with the band also featuring drum and bass work from Dale Crover,  who would later play with Nirvana and the Melvins. That band's Buzz Osborne had also performed briefly in Fecal Matter, though apparently not on this cassette
