Puritan Masochism

When a band get signed to the mighty Napalm Records with only a four-track demo to their name, you know they've hit something gold. Konvent are Copenhagen's latest metal export, and it's a name you should know soon — that is, if you enjoy death-doom metal so heavy, it sounds like a bulldozer crushing you in slow motion from the feet up.

There is such a critical shortage of all-female metal acts that it sadly still seems worth mentioning. Rikke Emilie List and company bring all they've got to this debut, which sounds like what you'd expect from a group with decades of touring and recording under their belts. Sabbathian caveman riffs and bleak vocals do not make for an easy listen, but songs like "The Eye" and "Bridge" strike the right balance between slow and heavy without ever getting boring.

Like Candlemass meets Novembers Doom, fans of the genre will know what they are getting before they spin the first track. Sometimes it's best this way, though it could use a bit more variety. Tracks come and go without having much to differentiate them besides different riffs and lyrics. Keep an eye on Konvent. Their rise is surely not over with Puritan Masochism.
