Exciting touring times are on the horizon for Whitehorse, YT singer-songwriter Kim Beggs. With her recently released third album, the rustic and rootsy Blue Bones, Beggs has scheduled several shows that are bound to attract attention.
After an appearance this month at Quebec's Festival Folk sur Richlieu, Beggs has lined up a five-show tour across New Brunswick with Chris Jagger, younger brother to Mick.
Beggs, who met Jagger earlier this year at the South by Southwest festival in Austin, TX, tells Exclaim! she is excited about the opportunity to explore a new collaboration.
"We're trying to figure out some songs to do together," Beggs says. "We'll each do our own set and then we'll find a couple of tunes to sing together at the end of the night."
Jagger has released seven albums since 1974, the most recent of which - 2009's The Ridge - is a collection of bluesy folk rock. He's has had an eclectic career, which has included, in addition to music, stints in theatre and clothing design.
"He's a great guy," says Beggs. "He's not a superstar like his brother, but he's quite socially conscious and he does a lot of different things. He has a farm, he writes and he does radio. I think that's pretty cool, because I do all kinds of things too. I think we'll get along just great."
Beggs will wind up her eastern tour with three dates at the Ottawa Folk Festival and then head back west for a few dates this fall with some folks closer to home: writer and performer Ivan E. Coyote and Yellowknife songwriter and storyteller Pat Braden.
The trio are putting together a show called "Up There," which Beggs describes as "a collaborative showcase of northern Canadian music and stories."
"It's a three-artist theatre show where we'll all be doing our own thing and then a bit of collaboration, as well," says Beggs.
It's a collaboration that's already had some road-testing, as Coyote recently commissioned a song from Beggs, "Maiden Heart," which appears on Blue Bones, as well as Coyote's forthcoming release, Only Two Reasons, a collection of Northern love songs and stories.
Beggs's previous album, 2006's Wanderer's Paean, earned her nominations for a Canadian Folk Music Award and a Western Canadian Music Award.
