Having recently got the Broken Social Scene gang back together, Kevin Drew has been basking in the press for their new album Hug of Thunder. While the write-ups have been mostly positive (including those from this very publication), a middling concert review from last month has been killing his good vibes.

When Broken Social Scene performed at Toronto's Field Trip on June 3, our reviewer Michael Rancic found Drew's onstage presence to be a little distracting. As our writer put it, "the Toronto band's homecoming show was cheapened somewhat by the avuncular antics of bandleader Kevin Drew, who announced guitar solos before they happened and drew attention to certain members as they hopped onstage by saying 'Ooohhh look who it is!!!!'"

Rather than see the positive in the 6/10 review, Drew apparently took it rather personally. In a new interview with the Globe and Mail, the frontman explained that Exclaim!'s review caused him to smash his phone and take a trip to his grandmother's grave.

"Six out of 10 I can take, but don't call me 'cheap,'" Drew said. "I put you on the guest list — you cost me $40!"

The Globe piece has been gaining plenty of attention since being recently published — not all of which has been positive. At one point, the writer compares Broken Social Scene to Saturday Night Live before revising the statement to say that they are more like the television network NBC in its entirety. Here's hoping Drew didn't read it on his phone.
