Gaspard Augé — known best as one half of French electronic duo Justice — has stepped out solo with a new single.
"Force Majeure," arriving today through Genesis/Ed Banger Records/Because Music, is the first taste of Augé's forthcoming solo album Escapades.
An accompanying video directed by Filip Nilsson brings Augé to the floor of the Bosphorus cymbal factory in Istanbul, Turkey. After he pounds out the song's stunning intro, cymbal makers hammer the handmade breakables in time with Augé's production.
"We were really attracted by the epic visual appeal of cymbal making, bronze, fire, hammers, something almost mythological and elemental like Vulcan or the Nibelungen," Augé said of the clip.
"We chose Bosphorus Cymbals because they had this very traditional process that barely changed in centuries, in this video I am just a link in the chain of production and quality control, after all these cymbals have been melted, hand hammered, and lathed into a musical object."
Prior to "Force Majeur," Augé scored Quentin Dupieux's film Rubber under his own name alongside Mr. Oizo.
Justice's most recent studio album remains 2016's Woman, which was followed by 2018 live LP Woman Worldwide. More recently, the duo made headlines for hitting Justin Bieber with a cease and desist.
