Julia Jacklin Announces New Album 'PRE PLEASURE,' Shares Lead Single and World Tour Dates

She'll play Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver this September

Singer-songwriter Julia Jacklin returns today with new single "Lydia Wears a Cross" and details of her highly-anticipated third album, as well as the announcement of a world tour.

PRE PLEASURE comes on August 26 via Polyvinyl. It follows Jacklin's 2019 sophomore effort Crushing and her 2016 debut Don't Let the Kids Win.

While she may be Australian, Jacklin recorded the album in Montreal with co-producer Marcus Paquin, with her touring band (featuring Ben Whiteley and Will Kidman of the Weather Station) also being based out of Canada. Owen Pallett also contributed string arrangements, which were recorded by a full orchestra in Prague.

"For the first time I stepped away from the guitar, and wrote a lot of the album on the Roland keyboard in my apartment in Montreal with its inbuilt band tracks. I blu-tacked reams of butcher paper to the walls, covered in lyrics and ideas, praying to the music gods that my brain would arrange everything in time," the artist said of the process, which began upon her return from a massive world tour in support of Crushing. She's plotted a similar one later in the year for PRE PLEASURE, which will bring her back to the album's birthplace as well as Toronto's Phoenix Concert Theatre and Vancouver's Commodore Ballroom with Katy Kirby in tow.

"A lot of the time I feel like I need to do all the work before I can enjoy my life," Jacklin explained of the titular sentiment in a statement. "Whether that's work on songs or sex, friendships, or my relationship with my family – I think if I work on them long and hard enough, eventually I'll get to sit around and really enjoy them. But that's not how anything works is it. It's all an ongoing process." She spent much of the last two years trying to reconnect with the purity of music fandom she lost when music became her career, citing listening to a lot of "big pop music" like Celine Dion, Robyn and Luther Vandross.

Of the lead single, she added: "The song is about a lot of things, but mainly being a seven-year-old Jesus Christ Superstar fanatic attending catholic school, trying to figure out which way is up." It builds from a sparse drum machine as Jacklin delivers her signature affected, uncompromising lyrics, roaring to a new dimension with a blistering guitar line and an understated swirl of synths.
