Multi-instrumentalist Jon Hynes has paid dues playing drums with the Hidden Cameras and Gentleman Reg, but he clearly has a deep well of his own to draw from. Now based in Ottawa, Hynes is a St. John's native, and had fun with his family who were in attendance. Supported by his solid band, Hynes played atmospheric pop and folk songs that have a surprisingly hopeful uplift and unexpected hooks and harmonies.

For anything like the brooding "Forever Kathleen (For the Books)," there was the dynamic and infectious "Me and the Radical," both from his solo album Watchful Creatures, which is due out this June. And man, what a strikingly beautiful cover of Bry Webb's "Undertaker" he and his band played. Hynes has quiet confidence and witty charisma as a frontman and storyteller; it's no wonder he's out there making a good name for himself.
