Growing up on Canada's East Coast, songwriter Jon Hynes was no stranger to making his own 4-track recordings, as well as learning and playing a variety of instruments by himself. His multi-instrumental skills have earned him a number of musical opportunities, from playing bass with the likes of Hey Rosetta! and the Hidden Cameras, to becoming a member of Jonas Bonnetta's Evening Hymns.
In collaboration with Pinball Sessions, we met up with the two bandmates on location at the Peterborough Folk Festival to watch them perform Hynes' "Opinion Piece," taken from his 2014 solo record Watchful Creatures.
A song with a meditative and calming nature, Hynes smoothly reaches up into his upper vocal register while gently finger picking his semi-hollow six-string. Bandmate Bonnetta provides support with a tambourine and backing vocals later on as the track reaches a new level of intensity, growing stronger as it creeps toward a stirring finish.
