Quirky harp songstress Joanna Newsom hasn't released an album since 2010's epic-length Have One on Me, but that's going to change this week with the arrival of Divers. With the album set to drop on Friday (October 23) through Drag City, the entire thing is available stream ahead of time.
The album synthesizes Newsom's strengths, with soundscapes that draw on the lush orchestrations of 2006's Ys while simultaneously employing a more straightforward approach with traditional track lengths. "Leaving the City" uses distorted electric guitar and punchy rhythms to explore a more rock-oriented sound, while other songs employ centuries-old classical influences, and closer "Time, as a Symptom" ends the album with a surging, brass-boosted crescendo and twittering bird calls.
