If Jessy Lanza came into her own in the shadows of darkened stages, relentless touring and gigging has banished that persona to a distant memory. At Camp Wavelength, Lanza danced in plain sight, fully lit in brilliant projector glow.

Maybe it was the forced intimacy of the sold-out Garrison, or perhaps it's that the Hamilton producer's been working with the same setlist for the past year, but Lanza's really come out of her shell, and when she hit the stage last night (August 18), that translated into a crowd that bumped and hung on every neon synth line, right on Lanza's level from set opener "New Ogi" through the chanted refrain of "VV Violence." So when Wavelength Artistic Director Jonny Dovercourt came onstage to deliver thank-yous after a bubbling "Oh No," the crowd demanded an encore. And Lanza obliged with a velvety "You Never Show Your Love"; there wasn't even a question if it was tongue-in-cheek.
