Jay Arner Returns with Surprise Album 'Jay III'

Get lost in a Triangle of Nightmares in his new "Thanks" video

Out of nowhere, Jay Arner has announced he's coming back into our lives with his third solo album — and the surprise release is right around the corner.

The Vancouver artist's logically titled Jay III — the follow-up to 2016's Jay II and 2013's Jay Arner — arrives this Friday (November 29) via Mint Records. It will be released both digitally and on cassette.

Don't expect another album of hook-loaded pop, however, with Jay III. As a press release explains, "Jay III follows Jay Arner on a solitary journey as he leaves behind the real world for another planet littered with synthesizers and vocoders. Recorded entirely on his own while his wife Jessica was out of town Jay says he 'devolved and went feral: staying inside, subsisting on rice and beans, muttering into a vocoder.'"

For a taste of the new album, you can watch the newly premiered video for "Thanks." The clip was directed by Arner's wife and Energy Slime bandmate Jessica Delisle, and as you'll witness, it finds him embarking on quite the surreal adventure.

Alongside Arner and Delisle, the video stars Supermoon's Adrienne LaBelle as the Jeans Vendor, with the clip finding Arner getting lost in a "Triangle of Nightmares." This includes some newly acquired jeans, a bass guitar and mountain bike, all of which (rightly) lead him on a very downward spiral. If you pay attention, you can also catch a cameo by Night Cat.

Right now, you can pre-order Jay III. However, the limited-edition tape will also be up for grabs IRL this weekend at Mint Records Ridiculously Early Xmas Party, where the first 50 people through the door will get a free copy of the new album on cassette.

Arner will also be performing at the Vancouver event on Saturday (November 30) at Red Gate alongside the likes of Tough Age, Dumb, Necking, Supermoon and Kellarissa. You can learn more about the event here.
