Both Jane's Addiction and Porno for Pyros are back, as both of Perry Farrell's most famous bands teased new material back in August. Now, Farrell has shared information about what the bands have been working on — and revealing Johnny Depp's role in the new material.
Speaking with NME, Farrell confirmed that JA and PFP each have laid down three new songs. He also confirmed that classic-era Jane's bassist Eric Avery is back, saying, "Yes, and we recorded three songs with him. That Jane's rhythm section is back."
He continued, "I invited Eric to participate in songwriting, I went up to Johnny Depp's place and laid down seven or eight songs. Some of them are [solo project] Kind Heaven Orchestra, some of them are Porno's, some of them are Jane's Addiction. Everybody contributed."
It's not clear what exactly he means by "Johnny Depp's place," but reports from 2019 suggested that Depp had built a recording studio, so that's a likely explanation. It's also not clear if the actor was present or played any direct role in the sessions. (Come to think of it, that photo of Jane's Addiction in the studio last month did feature a lot of red velvet and black leather, which adds up.)
The new recordings appear to be connected with Farrell's new Imprint Label. He said, "Now I have these songs, I hang on to them and to me they're valuable. I don't need anyone to tell me what they're worth. I can put them out at a pace, and it could be six months or eight months or wait a year. If I want to, I can drop one next week, but I wouldn't. You want to have a grand carriage for your songs."
Jane's Addiction's most recent album was 2011's The Great Escape Artist; Porno for Pyros was 1996's Good God's Urge. Jane's Addiction will be touring North America with Smashing Pumpkins this fall, including a few Canadian dates.
