Jack Peñate

Everything is New

BY Jessica LewisPublished Sep 1, 2009

South London, UK resident Peňate is back with his sophomore release, in the most literal formation of the album title: re-vamping his nascent sound in debut Matinée into something fun, soulful and refreshing. Peňate bursts with energy, giving off good vibes immediately. He salsa dances straight through the album to the high-pitched yet relaxed guitars, swaying bass and passionate vocals. Opener "Pull My Heart Away" breathes reluctance, walking backwards away from a love, but it's the right choice to start the record, as it doesn't break into the faster tracks and then cut awkwardly in between. However, the four following numbers, especially the title track, bring the tempo-changing, beat-driven, enlightening tropical parties, setting the bar high for the record and showcasing the production from Peňate and producer Paul Epworth. "Every Glance" gets the chance to show off Peňate's slower vocals, but he lets the party mode kick back in for the last three tracks. Peňate brings culture back into his circle of pop rock and it's warmly welcomed.
