Jack Peñate isn't a name too many people are familiar with yet, largely because out of thin air he just popped up on XL's roster only months ago without any story or bidding war. But this young veteran of pub gigging has earned his buzz thanks an irrepressibly chipper demeanour and an inventive approach to marketing himself (he included 1000 different polaroids in the limited run of his first seven-inch). According to this fantastic new video, he's also quite the puppeteer to boot. Already a chart success over in his home of England, Peñate's new single revives the jangly guitars and spirited melodies that '80s indie acts like Aztec Camera, the Housemartins and the Smiths (when Morrissey wasn't moping) brightened up the UK with two decades ago.
