Hypocrite Alert: Paul Weller Calls Shoegaze "Bollocks," Records New Album with Kevin Shields

BY Josiah HughesPublished Feb 25, 2010

As we recently told you, former Jam front-man Paul Weller has just put the finishing touches on his tenth solo album, Wake Up the Nation. The album, which is due in stores this April, sees Weller collaborating with none other than My Bloody Valentine's Kevin Shields. What's particularly strange about this collaboration, however, is that Weller probably wasn't a fan of Shields. After all, he recently wrote off the whole shoegaze movement as "bollocks."

Speaking with NME [via Digital Spy], Weller had a lot of hate for '90s guitar rock. "You'd had all that shoegazing bollocks and then the whole Nirvana thing, which I thought was fucking rubbish - it was just America catching up with punk rock 20 years too fucking late for me, you know."

If anything, a collaboration with one of the Gallagher brothers would have made a little more sense, as he counts Britpop bands like Oasis, the Charlatans and Suede among his musical peers. "That was the first time ever that I'd felt any kinship with any musicians - even though they were all probably at least ten years younger than me," he says.

Either way, you'll be able to hear Shields's shoegazing bollocks all over portions of Weller's new album. Wake Up the Nation is coming out on April 5 in the UK, while a North American release date is still forthcoming.

Oh, and apparently Paul Weller is a Godlike Genius
