Hollerado

Record in a Bag

BY Ian GormelyPublished Feb 8, 2010

If it can be said that there is a Canadian style of music, beer-soaked rock would be it. On any given night, in any given small town, there's a band playing Tragically Hip covers mixed with their originals to a host of regulars. Enter Montreal's Hollerado, a less well-read version of the Hold Steady. With a healthy dose of self-awareness, the quartet have crafted an album's worth of anthemic rock songs worthy of backyard parties and small-town bar band covers. "Americanarama" is already a minor hit and "Juliette" is deservedly on its way. But don't lump these guys in with would-be rock stars like the Trews ― there's any everyman sense to the band's music. Record in a Bag was actually self-released over a year ago and now, thanks to a year of touring that took them to both China and South America, is being re-released by Arts & Crafts. They're already working on their next record, where they'll hopefully prove that Record in a Bag's strengths were more than a fluke.
