Haviah Mighty Is a Canadian Cannabis Hero

The Brampton-based Polaris winner explains her cannabis preferences and advocates for those serving time for drug-related offences

Haviah Mighty is a former member of the Sorority and one of Canada's hottest rappers in the own right, having won the Polaris Music Prize for her 2019 album 13th Floor. She's now continuing her triumphant run well into 2020: she recently rolled out a video for the 13th Floor track "Bag Up," and she's celebrating her fondness for cannabis by selling branded rolling papers through her online store. She took our cannabis questionnaire to discuss her favourite strains, as well as carefully consider how recent legal changes ought to impact people serving time in jail.

What do you smoke and how do you consume it?

I used to predominantly enjoy the sativa strain, but I'm finding I'm really liking indica and hybrid strains these days. I generally smoke spliffs; sometimes blunts. I occasionally smoke pipes and don't use edibles frequently.

What do you like to do when you smoke?

I like to stimulate my senses when smoking — listening to music, watching a movie, eating a meal — and enjoy being creative in this state as well.

What do you think about the recent changes in cannabis culture?

I know very little about the politics of marijuana, but am having conversations with friends and experts alike to get a better understanding of the changes in the law, and how that impacts us. I'm disappointed in a system that has now legalized something that so many of my brothers and sisters are currently in jail, serving time, over possessing much less than the amount 'allowed' today. But, my research will continue.

Where in your city is great for cannabis?

Living in Brampton, there aren't many spots for acquiring marijuana, but we have a lot of parks and bike paths where you can walk and smoke.

Are there hidden (or not-so-hidden) cannabis references in your songs?

Definitely. Both hidden and not so hidden.

Who are your Canadian cannabis heroes?

I don't know that I have a Canadian cannabis hero. Or any cannabis hero. Cannabis is the hero!
