Grimes is gearing up to release a new album called Miss_Anthropocene, but according to the artist herself, it might be her last LP. She has said that she plans to abandon the album format — and she also wants to stop touring because of her intense stage fright.
In a new interview with Flaunt, she explained that Miss_Anthropocene will fulfill her contract with her label. "I'll never sign with another label. I'll never have to put out another album," she said. "If I didn't have this whole requirement to release an 'album,' I would have just dropped a bunch of music ages ago."
Clearly, Grimes still intends to release plenty of new music — she just intends to favour short-form releases instead of full-lengths. "Albums are trash unless you sit down and make a really good album," she said. "I'm not really that consistent. I feel like I would work better in like EP-ish formats."
As for playing live, she said, "I wanna retire from touring," adding that she's interested in doing a hologram tour instead. Even after all these years, she still suffers from stage fright, and she described playing live as "nightmarish. Apocalyptic. Terrifying, horrible."
The upside of all this is that, if Grimes does indeed stop touring and making albums, she will have more time to make art in different forms. Elsewhere in the Flaunt interview, she said that she's working on a novel plus a couple of different side-projects. Stay tuned for details on when Miss_Anthropocene will arrive. Hopefully, when it comes out, Grimes likes it a little better than Art Angels.
